In 2025 I was part of the GreenD 'Seaside', an annual summer school dedicated to living and working aboard a Polynesian Vaka (a traditional sailing catamaran replica) for an intensive week-long expedition. As participants, our goal is to immerse ourselves in nature and community to feel their impact, rethink sustainability, eco-design, and ocean protection, and then take action in working towards a better future.
As part of our knowledge exchange, I was able to share my love for sustainable photography processes, providing insight into the realm of anthotypes. To create an image, we used turmeric and beetroot to coat watercolor paper, making it sensitive to light. Collecting objects around the boat and along the shoreline, we then exposed our paper to the sunlight on deck for several hours. While exposed areas bleach as a result of sunlight exposure, the covered areas remain vibrant, thus creating contrast - and an image.
